The Filipino-American Association of Arizona
In October 27, 2002, a group of friends gathered for a picnic at the Estrella Mountain Park with
one common goal - - establish an association that would benefit the common desires of all the people present.
The picnic was so successful that the
very same day, a list of volunteer officers emerged eager and ready to serve. Within one week, these very
intelligent, positive and enthusiastic group of individuals started planning and creating a roadmap for the goals of the association.
First came the name.
After almost an hour of debate, the name Filipino-American Association of Arizona (FAAAZ) was adopted.
It has a nice ring to it and was very inclusive (since all members are coming from many different parts of the State).
Then came the constitution and a list of what types of activities the association would delve into. The
constitution took longer since it is the core document that binds everyone. The constitution is now ready
for ratification by the general membership. It was decided that the association would be a non-profit,
community-serving entity helping underprivileged children, specially the ones in the homeland. We are registered
with the Arizona Corporation Commission as a non-profit organization.
The charitable organization, Bantay Bata, was the first recipient of this generosity. Continuous
fundraising is for now a must, since the organization (FAAAZ) does not have enough funds to sustain it.
In July 2003, the young members (ages 9 to 21) have organized themselves into a very positive entity.
The Filipino-American Youth Association emerged. Positive comments have been received from all around.
The group is working on their own fundraising through various business entities around the area.
In September 20, 2003 marked the first officers’
induction ceremony and the second year of the association’s existence.
We have our annual events and participation:
Easter Picnic, Asian Festival, Philippine Independence Day Celebration, Halloween Picnic and our Christmas Party. We
currently have 172 family members and a set of officers that is continously working hand in hand.
